Sooo, yesterday I watched The Three Musketeers 3d (this is how I’m going to call it to distinguish it from the other numerous films with the same name), and it was meh.
The characters were all wrong: Athos HAS to be blond, it’s one of his most important physical characteristics; and he HAS to be silent and quiet all the time, and speak only when asked or when he has something clever to say; and, his thing with Milady was so nonsense: at this point of the story he’s already a misogynist big time; Aramis was too old and too masculine to be Aramis: he should have looked like the youngest of the three musketeers, should have had a feminine beauty and, well, should have been malicious in a way that only Aramis can be; Porthos was not great, but I love the fact that he’s actually the tallest and the strongest of them all, just as it was in the books; although, if there’s something I must say, he wasn’t that much of a Porthos to me: he should have had more funny a/o cheesy lines and not be that serious; d’Artagnan was oh, so wrong! He should have had a masculine physic and a masculine face. And, I’m sorry, he was all but masculine.
But, ladies and gentlemen, THE most awful casting award goes to… RICHELIEU!
I really haven’t seen a casting this wrong for that character before. Unbelievable.
Maybe it’s because I feel Tim Curry is the only Richelieu for me, because he was PERFECT, but I reaaaally didn’t like Christoph Waltz for the role.
Oh, and I won’t even talk about the other characters. I will only say that the queen was supposed to be beautiful. And that the Duke has nothing to do with Orlando Bloom.
On the plus side, YES PLANCHET!
I absolutely love Planchet in the books because he’s this strange character, a lot like Porthos, but more of an unknown bloke than the musketeer is. And, James Corden, anyone? I was so surprised when I saw him in the film! Yay!
Anyway, if I hadn’t read the book, I probably would have liked the film, I guess.
That’s the curse of the Time Lords readers.
